This model is a reinterpretation of the iconic German Army Trainer, often referred to as the GAT. Its origins date back to the 1970s, when it was developed for the German military, the Bundeswehr, or BW. Designed for training, it is a functional, durable, and robust shoe.

Its construction is instantly recognizable: a leather base, nubuck panels, and a rubber sole.

Its minimalist design allows it to be worn with almost anything, from shorts to tailored trousers. A distinctive and timeless pair, designed as an everyday essential.

To develop THE BEST SNEAKERS, BRUT called on Universal Surplus, whose work and expertise are closely connected to military clothing and equipment.

The shoes became functional, robust, and built to last.

THE LEATHER

Leather is the main material used throughout the shoe. It provides structure and durability while gradually softening with wear.

It allows the shoe to retain its shape while progressively adapting to the foot. Its durability also makes it well suited to everyday use and long-term wear.

THE HEEL MARKING

The number debossed on the back of the shoe corresponds to its size in centimeters.

Historically, this marking was placed on the outsole. Universal Surplus chose to reposition it at the back of the shoe.

THE TONGUE

The Universal Surplus signature is debossed directly into the tongue.

This detail references the technical and identification markings found on military equipment.

BEST BY TEST

THE BEST SNEAKERS was designed to be worn regularly and to evolve with its owner. The leather softens, the nubuck develops marks, and the materials gradually develop their own patina.

The shoe is designed to last and gain character over time.
